What Is Breakdancing?

Breaking is a street dance style that originated in the Bronx during the 1970s, emerging from African-American and Latino communities. It is widely recognised as the first dance style of Hip-Hop culture.

Breaking is known for its dynamic and athletic movement style, combining rhythm, creativity, and physical control. Dancers perform movements close to the floor, in circular patterns, and upside down, using their hands, head, or other creative points of balance to support their body.

The main elements of Breaking include:

  • Top Rock – Upright movements and steps performed while standing

  • Go Downs – Transitions from standing to the floor

  • Footwork – Fast, intricate movements performed close to the ground

  • Freezes – Controlled poses that stop the movement

  • Powermoves – Explosive, rotational, and acrobatic movements

The original name of the dance style is Breaking. Over time, media popularised the term “breakdance,” though practitioners typically refer to the style as Breaking, B-boying, or B-girling. Dancers identify as B-boys, B-girls, or Breakers.

Breaking is both a competitive and expressive art form, often showcased in freestyle sessions and battles where dancers exchange rounds, respond to music, and express individuality through movement.
